Summer Reading List

Although summer means many things...internships, vacation, beach trips, late nights and sleeping also means I finally have time to put away the textbooks and read all of the books piling up on my nightstand and on my Goodreads profile!

I've read two books in the past week (The Happiness Project and Skinny) and here's where y'all come in!  I need your suggestions!  What are some of your favorite books?  What books would you recommend over and over again?

Have y'all read any of these books?  They're on my to-read list and I was wondering what you thought!

Commencement / Penelope / Imperfect Birds / The Best Advice I Ever Got / Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close / The Innocents

Are there any books that you think I just have to read?  Let me know!

Book Review : The Happiness Project

It's summer and I finally have time to read through the metaphorical piles of books on my nightstand.  But really, they're just piled up on my nook. :)

The first book I started this summer was The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin.

I had heard really good things about this book, so I was excited to settle in with a tumbler of sweet tea on the chaise lounge and soak up the sun.  Needless to say, I was a little disappointed.  The book is Rubin's year-long journey to find happiness.  I thought the author was almost annoying.  Rubin set a list of goals for each month that she thought would make her happy.  Regardless of if she was actually happier by the end of the year, I feel bad for her husband and two young daughters who had to deal with her during her project.

I think the main reason I disliked this book was because the author was trying to find "hallmark happiness" instead of embracing everyday genuine happiness.  She went so far as to keep a chart to track her "happiness." #Ain'tNobodyGotTimeForThat

Have you read The Happiness Project?  What did you think?

I am not a huge fan of having the summer sniffles right now!  Whether it's allergies or the plague, I am not so happy to be spending the day in bed with a couple of books, a huge bottle of water, and a box of tissues.  In order to make this post not totally negative, I will say at least it's raining and dreary outside!

But seriously, body, summer is not the time to be sick!

What are y'all not loving this week?

Tuesday, May 28, 2013

I'm sure you've heard it before, and I'm going to tell you again, you should be drinking  at least  eight glasses of water per day.  When you wake up in the morning, your body is essentially already dehydrated.  So in addition to rehydrated from your night of beauty rest, it's important that you stay hydrated all day.

Whether it takes a cute cup....

(Personally a cup with a straw keeps me sipping all day long.)

Or knowing that staying hydrated can help your skin, weight, body temperature, and joints...

Memorial Day

I love a great backyard BBQ with hamburgers, hotdogs, pasta salad, deviled eggs, and potato chips as much as the next girl...but I think today it's important that we remember why our families are donning their red, white, and blue (or in my case: red, white, blue, and burnt).

We should be celebrating Memorial Day in order to honor those who have fought for our country.  So many of our country's men and woman have gone out to protect our country.  As great as your favorite BBQ food is, take time to consider the real reason for the long weekend.

Friday 5 & Tech Obsessed...combined!

Woah, getting a little fancy today now aren't we - combining Friday 5 and Tech Obsessed!  Today I'm going to talk about five of my favorite apps...but I love WAY more than five apps.  I have 121 apps downloaded in my iTunes...oops!  So today, I'm going to talk about my top five apps as of right now...but I'm sure I'll be back later to talk about more apps!

Who doesn't love a free radio that builds "playlists" based on a song or artist?  I usually put on Pandora if I'm studying or cleaning because it will keep playing music for hours!  My favorite study playlists are Jack Johnson and Grey's Anatomy Cast.

What would the Saturday Instagram Recap be without Instagram?  Take pictures, apply filters, post them...then go and like your friends awesome pics?  Sounds good to me!

I'd easily say that I'm a twitter-holic and I should probably go to #HashtaggersAnonymous.

Google Chrome
I'm not a huge fan of the Safari app the comes preloaded on iPads/iPhones.  There are a very different browsers that you can download from the app store, but I chose Google Chrome because that is the browser I use on my laptop.  The best thing about it?  It syncs my bookmarks between my iPhone, iPad, and laptop!

A Beautiful Mess
I just got this app in the last few days...but I already think it's pretty awesome!  You can add doodles, words, borders, and filters to your pics...then you can save them to your device, upload them to instagram, or share them in other ways!  You'll probably be seeing a lot of pics that I edited with A Beautiful Mess in my instagram recap tomorrow!

What are some of your favorite apps?

Guest Post : Kate from Kate the (Almost) Great

Today instead of life with rMe, we have life with Kate!  I was thrilled when my bloggy friend Kate volunteered to guest post for me!  Kate is an amazing woman and I knew that whatever she wrote would be perfect!  I gave her free-reign and, as I expected, I'm not disappointed!  After you read her post, I hope you'll hop over to her blog and see what she's up to these days!

Good morning! Or afternoon, evening, whatever time of day it is. My name is Kate Mitchell, and I’ll be filling in for my friend Rebecca today. You may know me as the author of Aureole, a Jane Austen-inspired contemporary novel published last year, or as the blogger behind Kate the (Almost) Great. [To check out the blog and/or learn more about me, or my book, see]

If you’re new to me, hi! I’m Kate. I’m a 22-year-old (well, almost 22) college graduate who starts teaching 9th grade this coming school year. I’m an author, an arthritis advocate, a J. Crew addict, a coffee lover, and a baker. I know that sounds like a lot – and it definitely is. That’s why I’m invading Rebecca’s blog to talk about 5 things I rely on to maintain balance and still get everything done.

1.     A Planner
It really helps me to have everything down and in one place. Deadlines, whether for business or for school? Write ‘em down. Appointments, goals, notes to yourself … write ‘em down. Having them all in one place that you regularly update and check really helps stay sane when you have a million things to do. But regularly updating and checking it is the most important part. It doesn’t help you if you sparingly look at it!

2.     A To-Do List
Making many, many lists runs in my family, and I caught the bug from my dad. For me, a busy weekend or day isn’t complete without a list of everything that needs to get done. Plus, it’s super satisfying checking off those items.

3.     A Routine
I would not be able to get through my day or my week without a routine. My routines help me get those things on my to-do list crossed off. Say that it’s 5pm, I’m home from school/work, and have a long night of work ahead of me. The last thing I want to do is work out. But luckily my routine has me working out every morning, so I know that I don’t have to worry about that. That’s just one example, but you can see how a routine gets things done and helps reduce how much you worry about the smaller elements of your life.

4.     A Cup of Coffee
A cup of coffee every morning is part of my routine. But it also wakes me up and gets me ready to face the challenges ahead of me every day. Like I said, I’m a coffee lover. My morning isn’t complete without some caffeine to pump me up and get me ready to go.

5.     A Bit of Free Time. Every. Day.
But probably the most important part of my day – yes, more important than coffee – is my free time. On the average day during the school year (this will continue when I’m teaching), I go non-stop from 5:30 AM – 10:30 PM. In order to continue my sanity and keep me in touch with the world, I make sure that I have some free time every single day. And I try to get some throughout the day, too. I start my day with yoga, which is free time, and then have some nice other breaks during the day, like when I first get home and in the hour or so before I go to bed. Without them, I’d probably lose my sanity. Make sure that you schedule some free time for yourself, too!

Thanks for reading this and listening to me ramble. And thanks to Rebecca for letting me commandeer her blog!

I am totally obsessed with this new Kate Spade iPad folio!  It is currently selling for $75.99 (originally $85) on Zappos.  However...I picked mine up for $14.99 at TJ Maxx!  I'm a sucker for a good deal...but this was a complete steal!  I've been wanting a folio style case for my iPad for a while, so this came at the perfect time!  (Plus, who can say no to the adorable composition book pattern?)

Summer Uniform : Part Three

I'm back with part three of my summer uniform series because...I got an internship!  I'll be tossing aside my norts and chinos one day a week and trading them in for some fancier clothes!

I am feeling so blessed today!  My interview was at 10:30 this morning, and by 10:45 I was in my car calling my parents to tell them that I got the internship!  I'll be working with editorial, marketing/public relations, photography, and digital media for a local lifestyle magazine called Susquehanna Style.  I start this Thursday, and I couldn't be more excited!  The woman who interviewed me even said that I would probably be going out on a photo shoot next, right?

What kinds of outfits do y'all wear to your internships?
The office didn't seem particularly dressy and the editor who interviewed me was wearing a cotton skirt and top with wedges...who knows I might even be able to squeeze in a Lilly shift ;)

Tech Obsessed

I'm going to start a new "column" (going back to my roots in student newspapers!) to talk about technology, apps, HTML, blogging, social media, and all other things computer related!  In simple words, I love technology.  Not only because it can enhance and simplify my life, but because it brings opportunities I wouldn't otherwise be so fortunate to have!

So to start out with...I thought I'd tell y'all about how I stay connected.

Needless to say, I have a few things to keep me connected at all times.  An iPad 2, Nook simple touch, iPhone 4 (which I'm hoping to trade in for an iPhone 5 soon!), iPods, cameras, headphones... Keeping up to date on the latest social media, news, and even my friends tweets is no difficult task when all it takes is the swipe of a screen or tuning in to the radio.  Keeping track of my own life is easy - snap a few pics on my iPhone or really capture the details with a DSLR.  Need to relax?  Read a book on my nook or listen to some Mumford and Sons on my iPod.

As you can see, (and as embarrassed as I am to say it..) my life depends on my technology.  To keep things in order, to keep things calm and

What kind of tech things are you interested in hearing about?  Do you depend on technology as much as I do?

Sunday Social {week fourteen}

Sunday Social

1. What is your favorite kind of surprise?
Something small like a letter in the mail or a new chapstick and nailpolish waiting for me when I get home

2. Flowers or chocolate?

3. What is your favorite summertime activity?
Just being home!  But I do like to go to our house on Lake Wallenpaupack and sit in the boat and read.

4. Do you have any vacations planned this summer?
I went to the cabin on the lake Friday-Saturday, and maybe we'll go up again later this summer.  It's not really a vacation, but I'm going to DC for a Network of Enlightened Women conference at the end of June, and I'm pretty psyched about that!

5. Favorite summer holiday?
4th of July, hands down.

6. What is your dream vacation?
I'd love to go back to Salamanca, Spain.

Friday 5 : Snacks

With summer coming, I'm prone to snack a little more.  Instead of reaching for chips or cookies, I tried to come up with a list of some healthier alternatives.  Living in Lancaster County certainly has it's perks the abundance of fresh fruit available!  A lot of Amish farms have road-side stands.  It's easy for us to stop at the stand and pick up whatever looks good.  I can't wait until cantaloupe is in season and we constantly have a bowl of sliced melon in the fridge!

Cantaloupe / Cheese Sticks
Pistachios / Strawberries / Cashews

Regardless of what you like to snack on, the key in portion control.  An extra-sharp cheddar cheese stick will never be the healthiest snack option.  But by having a small portion, I think it is okay.  However, I don't suggest have a chocolate bar for every snack...that will never be okay!

What are your favorite snacks?

Summer Uniform : Part Two

Need something a little more put together than running shorts?  My next go-to is always a pair of chinos  or printed with a simple top.  I probably own close to fifteen pairs of chino/Lilly Pulitzer callahan shorts.  Now that I think about it, that's kind of really pathetic..

summer #2

Add a pop of color with some neon chino shorts!

Vanilla Greek Yogurt + Granola + Fresh Fruit (strawberries or bananas are my favorite!)

I usually put half of container of yogurt, a handful of granola, and 2-3 sliced strawberries into a bowl for my breakfast!  When I mix in granola and fruit the whole container of yogurt is too much, so I just put half of the container back in the fridge for the next day!

What are your favorite breakfast foods?

I'm also joining in on the GFC blog hop again this week...interested?  Check out Chloe's blog!

Summer Uniform : Part One

Heading for a run?  In my case probably not.  But you can never go wrong with some running shorts and a t-shirt...and then if you do decide to put on your sneaks and get outside, you'll be ready to go.  Honestly, I just don't like wearing "real" clothes if I'm going to be home all dog sheds a lot and I end up covered in beagle hair.

Don't forget your sunscreen and sunglasses!
