Saturday Recap {week twenty-five}

Pearls and Curls

Sorry there was no post yesterday and this post is so late!  I had planned to write Friday's post in the hotel Thursday night, but it ended up that there wasn't any free wireless.  Today's post is brought to you by the incredibly slow and finnicky Amtrak internet.  I'm on the way home from DC now!

A fun $2 flea market find!
Dog mom life!

Just some of the food I've cooked, picked, and eaten this week.
NeW Conference in DC!
I hope y'all had a great week!

What's In My Bag?

As you read this, I'm either getting ready to embark on my train ride to Washington, D.C., or I'm somewhere between Lancaster and D.C.  Either way, I'm going to be spending around 6 hours on the train between today and Saturday.  I'm the kind of girl that can't stand to be bored.  Whether it's a good playlist or a book, I need something to keep myself busy!

Although carry-on bags for a train ride are a little different than what I would carry onto a plane (for instance, you can bring liquids on the train), for the most part, I would bring the same things.

A few helpful hints:

When I'm traveling with a large tote bag, I like to keep my money, cards, and ID in a wristlet that can be carried separately if needed.  I especially like this one from Lilly Pulitzer because my iPhone fits in the front compartment as well.

For train trips or roadtrips by car, I always carry a water bottle and some type of snack.  My Brita water bottle is usually my first choice because I don't have to worry about finding safe water to fill my bottle up with.  I can fill my bottle at the water fountain in the train station and know that the filter will make it taste great!  I also like to bring a small, easy to eat, non-messy snack, like a granola bar or cliff bar.  You never know when a train will get delayed or the snack car will run out of something you like.

I like to bring my Nook because it's light and I can load two or three new books on for my trip, but a real book is perfect, too!  Pick something interesting that you've been wanting to read for a while!

Finally, I like to throw in a bottle of hand sanitizer because trains and train stations aren't the cleanest places.  I'm a bit of a neat-freak, so any kind of dirt freaks me out!

What do you keep in your carry on bag?

WILW : Navy & Pink

This won't come as a surprise to many of you...but I've fallen head over heels for combining pink and navy!

Whether it be pairing a navy shirt with my neon pink shorts...or my neon pink shirt with my navy shorts...I can promise that at least 4 days of the week I'm wearing some kind of navy and pink combination.

How about these pink and navy decors?  *swoons*

What are your favorite color combos?

Will You Lean In?

I'm sure y'all have heard of Sheryl Sandberg's book, Lean In.  At first, I was hesitant to give into the hype.  Would it be worth the money?  Would I regret reading Lean In and wish I had read one of the other ninety books on my to-read list?  Once I saw Lean In in my sister's nook library, I knew that I had no reason to not start the book.  I wouldn't have to pay, and if I didn't like it, I wouldn't feel guilty if I gave up.

From the very first chapter, "The Leadership Ambition Gap" I was hooked.  In Sheryl Sandberg's terms, I was leaning in.  The subtitle of the first chapter really drew me in.  "What would you do if you weren't afraid?"  I don't think a single sentence has ever made me think so much.  Really...if you could do anything without fear or failure, what would you do?!

Obviously I'm not going to discuss every point in the book...mainly because I think each and every one of you should pick up a copy and dig in.  But there are a few more quotes that really stuck out to me that I thought I'd share!  This is one of the few books that I've read for pleasure that I was constantly copying down quotes or "highlighting" them on my nook.  I'm used to doing that when I read books for school, but I rarely do it in books I'm reading for fun.

Sandberg said "Even among highly educated and professional men and women, more men than women describe themselves as 'ambitious.'"  She went on to say that "Many women still see ambition as a dirty word."  I had to pick my jaw up from the floor when I read this.  Although I know that it is completely true, I just wish it wasn't!  Maybe it's because I went to an all-girls high school and now I go to a womens' college, but I've never felt like men were superior to me.  I know that's because I've never been in a position where I could feel this way, but I'm not complaining.

This is only my first of many Lean In posts (I don't want to write so much that no one reads it!), but I thought I'd leave y'all today with an iPhone background for a little daily inspiration.

Have you read Lean In?  I'd love to talk to you about it!  I'm bursting to the seams with excitement.  I'm hoping to read the first chapter with the Sweet Briar chapter of NeW next semester.

Network of Enlightened Women

I don't think I've ever talked about this here...but I'm in a club at Sweet Briar called the Network of Enlightened Women (NeW).  NeW is a a club for conservative college students.  The club started in 2004 at the University of Virginia as a book club.  In 2013, the club has chapters on over 20 campuses from Florida to Georgia to Arizona.

The NeW chapter at Sweet Briar is in it's early stages.  But so far we've already had Mary Beth Carozza, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense, come to speak to our chapter.  I was recently chosen to serve as president, so I'm already thinking about some things we can do.  In addition to chapter-wide events, NeW has nation-wide events such as the national conference and the Gentlemen's Showcase.  Sweet Briar didn't participate in the Gentlemen's Showcase last year since we....don't have any guys on campus to nominate.  I'm hoping that we can wrangle a gentleman from our brother school to participate next year!

Chapters of NeW meet to discuss books and articles that discuss the opportunities and challenges are women are faced with today.  I'm already compiling a list of books (even if just a few pages/chapters) and articles for our club to start with next semester.  (Do you have any suggestions?  I'm hoping to start with a chapter of Sheryl Sandberg's Lean In.)

I'll be heading down to Washington, D.C., for the national conference this week!  I'm excited to meet with the leaders from other chapters of NeW and see some of my Sweet Briar friends at the conference.

Does your school have a chapter of NeW or a similar club?

6 Questions All About Me

My dear friend Karoline from....
tagged me in a fun post to answer six questions about myself!

1. If you had to pick one color for all the clothes in your wardrobe besides neutrals (black, white, beige, navy), what would that color be?
Pink!  Hands down!  My favorite color combination for clothes is pink and navy, so if I already had navy, it would be a no-brainer to choose pink!

2. Favorite animal at the zoo and why.

I haven't been to the zoo since I was really little...but I remember really liking the polar bears!

3. What is your perfect summer day?

Sunny with a little breeze...warm enough to lay outside with a good book, but not so hot that you're dripping with sweat!

4. Favorite Lilly print? (cause I know you two are a couple of Lilly lovers!)

UGH THIS IS SO HARD, KAROLINE!  Here are some of my favorites...

5. Food you could eat over and over without getting sick of it.

I really love cheese.  Mozzarella, extra sharp, brie

6. If you could have any pet in the world, aside from any you currently have, what would it be and what would you name it?
I would have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Lucy or Lola.

Saturday Recap {week twenty-four}

Pearls and Curls

This would be why we need a Trader Joe's closer to we don't have to buy out the entire store.

I almost died.
This is what I like to call a little productivity.
(But it probably really only resulted in one blog post.)
Another beautiful day of strawberry picking in Lancaster County.
If y'all are keeping a count, this is my third time picking in two weeks...
Just some food from the week...
Turkey chili, fruits & veggies from roadside stands, silver dollar pancakes and a smoothie, a smoothie in process
National Wear Your Lilly Day with my favorite beagle.
Even Alice put on her Lilly bandana! :)
What did y'all do this week?

National Wear Your Lilly Day

Personally, I think everyday is a good day to wear your Lilly.  But in case you needed a reason to wear your Lilly today...

It's National Wear your Lilly Day!

Opening Convocation 2012 / Winter Mixer 2012 / College Day 2011 / Summer 2011 / Prom 2011 / Warehouse Sale 2010

As you can tell, Lilly has been everywhere with me.  From high school prom to college dances and convocation, I've always worn something Lilly (and usually something pink and green!)

What are your favorite Lilly pieces?  Are you wearing your Lilly today?

Tech Obsessed: iPad vs. Nook

When I first introduced the "tech obsessed" segment, some of my readers asked that I do a post explaining how I use my iPad and nook.  Since they can both be used as eReaders, I understand why some people might wonder why I have both!

I mostly use my iPad for internet surfing on the go, apps, reading blogs, reading the news, and catching up on facebook, twitter, and instagram.  Although the iPad can be used for an eReader with Apple's "Books" app, the Kindle app, and the Nook app, I don't like using the iPad for reading books because of the backlight.  Instead of bringing my laptop to class, I tend to bring my iPad because it is lighter, smaller, and it fits in my bag better.  I like to handwrite my notes, but I'll bring my iPad in case I need to look up anything the teacher says.  Because I'm a Spanish major, I frequently have to look up words to translate, so I have a few translation apps on my iPad!

Because I have Nook Simple Touch, essentially all you can do is read and buy books from the Nook store.  This version of the nook has an e Ink display which means that the screen is supposed to mirror the effect of reading a real book.  You can read this kind of nook in the sun and there won't be a glare.  However, it is impossible to use the nook in the sun.  I also prefer the nook for reading because the battery life is amazing.  I've been home for a month and a half and I've only had to charge my nook once.  I read every night before bed and during the day 5 days out of the week.  The nook is also lighter  to hold in your hands while reading.

I use the iPad for apps and the nook for reading.  I do light reading (news, articles, websites) on the iPad, but for books, I would choose my nook any day.

Do you use an eReader?

WILW: Cocoa Almond Spread

If you have a Trader Joe's near you and you like Nutella, you need to try this stuff!
I like it almost better than Nutella because it's a little less sweet.  I've been spreading it on a bagel thin, putting it on bananas, and I may eaten it straight off the spoon once or twice.

Have you ever tried cocoa almond spread?

What to Do: Summer Fun

Yesterday I was texting my friend Bess trying to figure out what we were going to do when we hung out later in the week...aside from the typical movies and mall, I was coming up short on something fun for us to do.

That's when I decided I should try to come up with a list of free/relatively cheap things so next time we were having trouble we would just have to check out my list!

We're already waiting for the next sunny day to head out on the Lancaster Junction Recreation Trail for  a five mile "hike."  (I'd say it's more like an extended nature walk, honestly.)

What do you and your friends like to do in the summer?

Friday 5 : Closet Must-Haves

Today's Friday 5 is all about my top five must-haves in your closet or wardrobe.

A durable and versatile tote or bag, a necklace that can go with every outfit, a pair of shoes that are comfortable and neutral, a good watch, and a pair of pearl studs.

What do you consider necessities in your closet?

Thursday, June 13, 2013

Carlee from East Coast Girl In Pearls recently nominated me for the Liebster Award.  Because I just did another nomination post a few days ago, instead of repeating the whole process I thought I'd just answer her questions so y'all could get to know me a little better!

1. What made you decide to start a blog?
I had been writing a blog with my roommate Amber (it was called Life In The Prep Lane...many of y'all probably followed that blog, too!) but as things got busy we parted our blogging ways and thus Life with rMe was born.

2. What is your dream job?
I would love to serve as a courtroom or hospital interpretor.

3. What is that one embarrassing song that you can't get enough of?
I can't think of anything specific, but I love to jam out to a good song in the car....

4. Celebrity Crush?
Patrick Dempsey.  Hunter Parrish.

5. What's one thing on your bucket list?
Traveling through Central America would be pretty stellar.

6. Morning person or night person?
Morning person, hands down.  No matter what time I go to bed I wake up before 8am.

7. Heels or flats?
Do Jacks count as heels or flats?  They have a slight heel, but I wouldn't consider them heels...?

8. You're stuck on an island for a week, what three things do you bring?
My dog, Alice, a solar-powered iPhone charger, and a Brita filter waterbottle.

9. Favorite book you've ever read?
The Catcher in the Rye

10. What kind of purse are you carrying right now?
A large navy Longchamp.

11. What is one beauty item you never go without?
Toner and moisturizer...I don't wear makeup on a regular basis.

WILW : Nivea Lip Butter

I was hesitant to try this because I typically don't like lip balms where you have to put your finger in it...germs, bacteria, GROSS!  But I had heard a lot of good things about Nivea's new lip butters, and I like their other lip balms.  Plus, I saw this 2/$4 at CVS, which was essentially buy one get one free.  So I knew it was the best time to try it if I was going to...and oh my word, you need to go get yourself one!  I chose the vanilla and macadamia flavor, but they also have raspberry, caramel, and original.  They are so moisturizing and feel great on your lips!  I'm hoping to pick up the raspberry flavor soon. :)

Have y'all tried these lip butters yet?

Bucketlist - Summer 2013

A few days ago Caroline did a blogpost about her summer bucketlist.  I was inspired by her post and thought I would put together a little bucketlist of my own!  I don't have any major plans for the summer...but there are a few things I would like to do before heading back to school in August!

Well, I can already cross #1 off the list!  Last Wednesday my friend Diana and I spent the morning in strawberry heaven.  First, we each picked around nine pounds of strawberries at a local berry farm.  Then we baked two strawberry pies, made homemade whipped cream for on top of the pies, and made strawberry smoothies to eat with our lunch.  I'd say this was a pretty successful way to start completing the items on my bucketlist!

I'll be checking #3 off of my list on June 27th.  That morning I'll be heading to DC on the Amtrak for a conference I'll be attending that evening and the following day.  My travel plans are set, but I should probably book my train tickets before prices go up! *Note to self: Book train tickets this afternoon.*

When I came home from school, I came home with a box of all of the magazines that I had received in the mail during the school year.  I don't have much time to read for fun while I'm at school, so I'm determined to tackle all of the magazines while I have the time.

Sunday, June 9, 2013

When I picked up the neon orange pants at the warehouse sale, I was nervous that I would know what to wear with them or that I would look like a tragic train wreck any time I did wear them.

So yesterday, I took on the challenge of the fluorescent pants.
OOTD - 6/8/13

I tried to keep my top and accessories neutral while letting the pants be the focal point.  I paired them with a navy/white striped t-shirt, platinum Jack Rogers, and a navy Longchamp.

How do you wear your neon?

Saturday Recap {week twenty-two}

Pearls and Curls

I hope everyone's week was as amazing as mine!  I tried something a little new for this week's recap....I went a little Insta-crazy, so I combined pics that I took at once into a "photostrip."  Let me know what y'all think of this!

Just a little book shopping at B&N!
While at B&N, I finally got to see the 3rd edition of uChic.  The 3rd edition has my published article!
Little Alice and I went on a long walk around the town where my high school is - Lititz, PA
(America's Coolest Small Town!)
Some more scenes of my high school from our walk
Wednesday morning my bestfriend, Diana, and I went strawberry picking!

I'm sure y'all have already heard my talk enough about the Warehouse Sale...but one final pic!
What did y'all do this week!?
