Dorm 101: Storage

Since dorm rooms are notoriously small, it's important to maximize the space that you do have.  Utilizing different types of storage bins to keep everything organized and out of sight, will help to make it seem like your room is bigger than it is!

Because you don't know how big your room is or the size of the closets when you move into a new room, I recommend buying different kinds of storage systems and keeping the receipts.  Then you can return whatever doesn't work for you, but you'll have everything you need!  If you wait to go to the store on move in day, you risk meeting up with your entire freshman class in the aisle and not getting what you need or want!

It's important to utilize storage under the bed, on the backs of doors, and on any shelves that you may have.  Stores like Bed, Bath, and Beyond and The Container Store sell all different kinds of under the bed storage bags.  They even sell ones that are specially divided for your shoes!

Pro Tip #1: Over the door shoe organizers are great for small accessories, chargers, scarves, koozies, tights, leggings, etc.

How do you (or how do you plan) to keep your dorm room organized?

  1. Really good suggestions! I definitely want to use those Scout baskets when I go off to school next year!

  2. OH MY GOD LILLY MAKES THOSE COLLAPSABLE BOX THINGIES?!?!?!?!?! If only I were still in college! I had cubbies from Target that I put those fabric boxes into. I wish I knew about the Lilly ones!

  3. The idea of a shoe holder behind the door to store other things, brilliant.
