Asics vs. Nikes

First, a housekeeping announcement.  I don't want to give up blogging, but the goal that I set for myself at the beginning of the year, to blog everyday, just isn't reasonable with my commitments this semester.  Instead of giving up totally, I've come up with a new posting schedule.  I'm hoping to post on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, with the occasional post on a Saturday or Sunday.

Onto the fun as I mentioned in a previous post, I've picked up a new "hobby" (is it a hobby? Or just something to do? I don't know...) of running.  I used to completely despise running.  Fun fact, my sophomore year of high school, the varsity soccer team was required to run fall cross country and I only lasted like two weeks before I gave up (yet somehow I still played varsity soccer that year...)  Oh yeah, and those spring break training plans that our varsity soccer coach gave us?  They went in my soccer bag on the Friday before break not to emerge until I had to clean out my bag at the end of the season.  So with this background on running, it's kind of hard to imagine that I actually *gasp* enjoy running and working out now!

I'm hoping through my "journey" as a runner, I'll be able to share some tips and workouts to help you get up on your feet, but first, I'd like to address a common misconception.

Asics Gel-Excite 2 vs. Nike Free Runs

We all recognize the shoe on the right, the Nike Free Run.  Given the word run is even in the name of the shoe, you'd all thing they're great running shoes, right?  You see people, even celebrities, working out and running in them.

False.  Nike Free Runs are not good running shoes.  Sure they're fine for a walk around the neighborhood, walking the dog, running errands, etc, etc, but the moment you decide to hit the pavement, turn up the tunes, and let the wind blow in your hair, you should probably consider a different type of running shoe.  Nike Free's do not offer the same support and flexibility of an average running shoe.  They are meant to mimic the "barefoot" running trend, so basically, imagine yourself running with no shoes on at all.

Since I saw a lot of people running in Free Runs, I thought they were your average sneaker.  I was an Asics fan all through high school, but over Christmas break when I got a new pair of sneaks, I decided to join the trend and get a pair of Nikes.  What.  A.  Mistake.

They were fine for daily use...going to class, running to Target, the usual, but the moment I stepped on the elliptical, I knew I was in trouble.  I thought, "oh maybe I'm just out of shape so I'm sore all over."  "oh maybe if I just give it some time it'll feel better."  No, ladies (and gentleman?) that's not quite what happened.  Instead, I got intense pains in my feet, shins, and knees.  I had never had this type of pain in the past, and after consulting the trusty internet, I discovered my beloved Nikes were probably the culprit.

And that is the story of how I traded in my trendy Nikes for a pair of supportive, flexible, dependable Asic Gel-Excite 2's.  I took them for their first spin on a short run yesterday morning, and let me tell you, things are going up from here!

What do you look for in a running shoe?

p.s., I'm no doctor or trained professional, so if your Free Runs seem to be working for you, then go on and keep on running.  But if you feel like things might be off, considering changing your shoes or visiting a doctor to see what the problem may be.


  1. I'm an ASIC fan too. I just picked up a new pair yesterday. I tried on some of the Nike shoes, but they just didn't feel supportive enough, so I went back to what I knew would work. The colours aren't quite as fun, but I'd rather happy legs and feet!

  2. My orthopedic surgeons HATE Nikes and have been singing Asic's praises for 10 years. All doctors who I have talked to about it say nay to Nikes and aye to Asics.

  3. Those ASICs are so pretty!! I have Brooks that I love, but probably need to get replacements soon! Good for you with the running! I'm working on getting my running act together!

  4. My first thought when I read this was "THANK YOU! Someone who gets it!" Haha- I loved the look of my Nike Frees as much as any other college girl, but they're absolutely worthless when it comes to actually running! I wore Asics for a while, and I may go back soon!

  5. Wow, thats really interesting because I love nikes to run in, even the nike free runs that you don't like. I actually used nike free runs all last year during my varsity track season where I was probably running about 25 miles a week. I love the barefoot feel so much that I also tried to used them for my varsity cross country season too, but they don't do very well on trails, so I switched to a pair of nikes especially for trails. Something that may help with your shoes is getting special running inserts for them- I use the brand superfeet, which help give my shoes more support without compromising the light feel that I prefer in my shoes. I honestly hate the feel of Asics, they just feel so clunky to me... but to each their own, I guess!

  6. i personally us saucony running shoes and love them, but I think it is such a personal preference! my momma took me to pick out a pair last year for christmas at a running shop where i got fitted for them and now love them. i have several friends who have injured themselves in free runs, including stress fractures in their feet! glad you traded them in and found a shoe that works for you!

    as for blogging every day, i set the same goal and saw it bite the dust pretty fast with everything i have going on. glad that you're prioritizing rather than trying to overextend yourself!
