Beach Essentials

Now that you've picked the perfect beach's all about packing the essentials for a fun day on the sand!

The secret to packing your beach bag is to pack as few things as possible, to make your bag easy to carry, but to pack everything you may need so you don't have to interrupt your beach day by going back to the house.

I have super fair skin, as I'm sure I've mentioned about a hundred times before, so sunscreen is a must.  Even if you're tan, or trying to get a tan, use sunscreen!!  The sun's rays can change depending on location, so if you're used to the sun at home, the rays at the beach may be much more powerful causing you a painful sunburn!  Also, remember to use a lipbalm with SPF.  Sunburn lips are the worst.

Don't forget a waterbottle to stay hydrated, and some snacks to avoid becoming hangry!

Some sunglasses (don't forget your croakies!) or a baseball cap to keep the sun out of your eyes.

And lastly, don't forget to relax and breathe, because a beach vacation is the perfect time to decompress from your job or just the stress of "real life!"

What are your beach bag must haves?

Choosing The Perfect Beach Bag

As I mentioned in a past blog post, my family will be going on a beach vacation for the first time in a few years.  We're usually lake-vacationers, so preparing for this beach vacation has been a little challenging.  I'm hesitant to bring a nice bag onto the beach because of the sand, so I've rounded up a few options that would make great beach bags for now, and would be perfect to use for other purposes after vacation.
beach bag

The first thing I was looking for in a beach bag was something that would be easily cleaned if something spilled inside (sunscreen or a drink) and that the sand that will inevitably make it's way inside could be easily disposed of.

Secondly, I looked for options that would be great for the beach, but that I would also use other times during the year.

Lastly, I looked for options that would be large enough to carry multiple towels, sunscreen, drinks, and snacks so that all of my beach needs would fit in one bag to tote them down to the water.

I already own a Lilly Pulitzer Cooler Tote from a beach trip a few years ago, but I was going to pick up a new market tote for this beach trip.  They're cheap ($10), and I just can't get enough of the Lobstah Roll print.  Unfortunately (or fortunately for my wallet?), this bag is pretty much sold out everywhere.

What kind of bag would you choose for the beach?

Summer Favorites

It feels like my summer vacation just started, with all the #hustle of the big city, but in reality, I've been in PA/NJ/NY for about a month now! This summer has been odd, in the sense that I'm splitting my weeks in half - half in Manhattan and half at home in Pennsylvania.

I'm looking forward to a beach vacation in two weeks, but until then, here are a few of the things I've been enjoying thus far this summer...

A little bit of EOS to keep my lips from getting too dry in the summer sun (the lemon drop version has SPF, too!) A little bit of Neutrogena sunscreen to protect my whiter-than-white skin.  This Vera Bradley card case to hold my NJ Transit tickets and MetroCard.  An ENO Hammock and Chacos for my relaxing weekends at home in PA.  My favorite glass Lifefactory bottle for staying hydrated and reducing waste.  A few pairs of J. Crew's trusty chino shorts to throw on with a button down, t-shirt, or polo, depending on the occasion.  Oh, and I couldn't forget my favorite summer snack - strawberries!  Perfect for eating alone or mixing into a big fruit salad with raspberries, blueberries, and bananas.

What have you been loving so far this summer?

Look for Less: Bathing Suit Coverup

Congratulations to Sherry Lykins and Chelsea Chambers for winning my Brewer's Lantern Giveaway.  Please email me by 9pm on Tuesday, June 17th, to claim your prize.  If I do not hear from you by then, I will be drawing another winner.

We're not a beach family.  My grandparents have a house on a lake, so we usually just go there for a few days for a summer getaway.  However, this year, we're actually going to the beach for a week, and I couldn't be more excited!  We're renting a house in Cape May, and even little Alice the Beagle gets to come! (Prepare yourself for pictures of Alice on the beach, I just can't wait!)

As we prepare for your vacation by purchasing "beach essentials" like beach chairs and new towels, I've also started to think about bathing suits, cover ups, and what other outfits I'll want to bring on vacation.

As I'm sure y'all know, I'm very in the color of my skin.  If I'm going to be outside for an extended amount of time, I have to use SPF 70+ and reapply fairly regularly.  On pinterest and tumblr I've seen tons of girls using Columbia PFG fishing shirts as cover ups...I never really took note until I heard someone at school say that this type of shirt, since it is meant to be worn out on the boat, also has SPF "built in" to protect against the sun.

All photos are from pinterest.

However, the pricetag was a little too much for a beach cover up.  The plain shirt, without a monogram, runs about $50 (or more depending on the color and design), and many etsy shops are charging $60-80 for a PFG with the large monogram on the back.

I did a little searching on google to see if I could find a more budget friendly option.  As many of you know, Amazon compiles many different stores and shops to offer the best deal on many different products.  Often different colors are sold at different prices either due to overstock or popularity.  Because I didn't have a specific color in mind, I was open to finding the best deal.

Screenshot from Amazon

Here on Amazon we see that there are PFG shirts (I chose men's because I didn't want it to be fitted) ranging in price from $12.25-$99.99.  I was on a mission to see what they had in my size at the cheapest price.  Much to my surprise, I found my size, in white, for only $13.01!

You can also search from long sleeve version on Amazon.  I scored a long sleeve bonehead shirt in a nice aqua color for only $15.40!

So now you say...but Becca, what about the monogram?!?!?  Well, I'm lucky enough that my mom has an embroidery machine and is able to monograms from the comfort of our own home (and for free!) But many embroidery shops will allow for you to bring in your own clothing and they will add your monogram for a low cost.  I can't imagine even the large monogram on the back being more than $15.

So say you paid $15 for a shirt and then $15 for a monogram?  Well that's only $30, and you've saved at least $35!  And with your savings, you can now you can buy yourself a new bathing suit to wear under your cover up! :)

Lilly Pulitzer Warehouse Sale 2014

I've posted about the Lilly Pulitzer Warehouse sale before (here & here), and just like the past few years, the warehouse sale was a "must-do" in my summer plans.  It took place in Oaks, PA, last week.  Fortunately, I was able to re-arrange my internship schedule to allow me to spend the beginning of the week in the city, drive down to the warehouse sale, and then spend the weekend at home!

I ended up driving right from Jersey to the sale and arriving in Oaks around 9:30pm.  From 9:30 until about 3:30am, we were camped out in the Expo Center's parking lot.  I got a little bit of sleep, but I mainly enjoyed chatting with friends and fellow Lilly lovers.

The sale opens at 5am, so around 4am they start allowing people to line up inside the Expo Hall.  I'd say I was in the first 300ish in line, so we were into the actual sale by 5:15.

The best part about the sale is the seconds and samples area.  I scored the best deals by scouring through these boxes.  The best method of the morning is to throw anything in your size that you might be interested in into your bag, then when things start to calm down, you find a place to start sorting through your tote and trying things on.  In addition to myself, I was shopping for my sister and Bess since they weren't able to join me this year, so I was looking for three different sizes.

Optical Confusion Murfee / Trippin & Sippin Popover / Dockhopper Pippa Pants / Navy Beckett / Shimmy Shell Elsa / Lilly Loves Hope Murfee
I also got four other murfees and a Briella dress, but I was unable to find photos!

This was my most successful sale of all time.  In addition to finding great bargains for Bess and my sister (who wear smaller sizes), I was also able to find some great deals for myself.  I usually only walk out of the sample/seconds section with one or two things, but I really made out this year!

After looking through the samples, I usually make a lap to see what accessories they have available.  Much to my surprise, there was a huge murfee selection this year and they were only $34 each!  They retail for $118.  In addition to some newer prints, they also had some prints that I would say come out around 2010 or earlier!

I also scored some great deals for Heather (my sister, if y'all didn't know!) and Bess.  I got Bess a pair of Callahan shorts that are still on the Lilly website for only $15 (retail price: $64).  I found Heather a beautiful hot pink dress with an organza lace overlay for $30 (retail price: $278).  I also found both Heather and Bess the same popover that I found myself!  Hopefully when Bess comes to NYC this summer all three of us won't match! =P

I spent a little more than I usually do at the warehouse sale, especially considering I have an unpaid internship, but I just couldn't pass up the older murfees!  They are the perfect addition to many of my outfits in the fall and winter, and I can't wait to share how I style them when it's not so hot out!

Did you go to the Warehouse Sale?

GIVEAWAY : Brewer's Lantern

Hi Friends!

Sorry for my long absence!  I got so wrapped into too many good books, enjoying the summer, and relaxing with Alice on my weekend's home, that blogging went to the bottom of the list.

To make up for my hiatus, I have a fun giveaway for y'all!

Recently I had been in contact with Brewer's Lantern, a fabulous southern brand with some of the cutest pocket tees I've ever seen... and trust me, I've seen my fair share of different brands at Sweet Briar!

I tested out their "Southern Bucket List" shirt and the "Mason Jar" tank.  When I first took them out of the package, I could already tell they were great quality.  The shirts are thick and sturdy, but not the kind of thick t-shirt that is actually uncomfortable.  These shirts have the same feel as a comfort colors t-shirt, and those are super comfortable!

The Mason Jar tank will be on repeat this summer when I'm not in NYC.  Perfect for lounging in the hammock, beach trips, and whatever other kinds of adventures this summer brings.  Plus, the mason jar design is just too cute!

The back of the tank has the same mason jar logo, only much larger!  In addition to Brewer's Lantern shirts being extremely comfortable, the designs are also inventive and unique.

In addition to the tank and t-shirt, Brewer's Lantern also sent me a few goodies to giveaway to y'all!  I have two prize packs to giveaway.  Two winners will each win a Brewer's Lantern sticker and Brewer's Lantern koozie!

To enter, use the rafflecopter widget below!
Giveaway is open only to U.S. residents.
